I don’t have much news for you this week.

COVID-19 levels seem to be increasing around us.

COVID-19

COVID-Related Excess Death and Sickness

This report from Canada (2026-09-10) reports that people who self-reported having had a COVID-19 infection had a much higher risk of developing a new medical condition compared to people who said they’d never had a COVID-19 infection:

  • 1.76 times as likely to be diagnosed with any new condition;
  • 5.03 times as likely to be diagnosed with a new respiratory condition;
  • 3.79 times as likely to be diagnosed with back problems (!).

The survey covered from January 2020 to June 2023.

This paper with data from Norway (2026-09-03) reports that kids exposed to COVID-19 while in the womb were not statistically significantly more likely to have any of a whole laundry list of neurodevelopmental disorders than kids who were not — except for speech and language disorders. Kids who had been exposed to COVID-19 while in the womb were 2.22 times as likely to have speech / language disorders.

This paper from China (2026-08-26) reports that compared to professional singers who did not have a COVID-19 infection, professional singers who had COVID-19 infections had more than double the risk of voice impairment and almost nine times the risk of throat clearing.
