COVID-19

COVID-19 is going up slightly, but from a very low base. Influenza is still a much bigger deal right now.

Charts

From the Viral Pathogen Characterization page:

NB: I don’t know why this graphic says that influenza A has gone down: their own data says that last week had 1417 cases compared to 1199 the week before. COVID-19 also rose by about 50%… so I think this graphic is bogus.

As I suspected, the slight drop in various respiratory illness levels in the last provincial report was in fact an artifact of the holidays. Flu has not peaked, and it is absolutely dominating the respiratory virus scene in BC.

RSV and COVID-19 are starting to go up as well (although COVID-19 levels are still low compared to most of the past five years).

In the most recent data (ending 3 Jan 2026) as reported on 8 Jan 2026, among influenza-like illness (i.e respiratory diseases) cases that the province has test data for:

  • 69.1% were influenza A or B;
  • 13.6% were RSV;
  • 6.6% were COVID-19;
  • 5.0% were entero/rhinoviruses;
  • 2.7% were metapneumonia viruses;
  • 1.6% were parainfluenza;
  • 0.7% were adenoviruses;
  • 0.6% were “common cold” coronaviruses.
